In the early morning hours of March 3, 1914, little 4 year old John Lewis Carhichael playfully tied his mother’s, Willie May Rowe Carmichael wife of Perry Hayden Carmichael, apron to himself. While standing in front of an open fireplace, the loose garment caught fire and it spread to all of his clothes. He suffered severe burns and died at 9pm that night, “when his spirit winged its flight to the God who gave it”.
His mother’s hands were severely burned in trying to save her son.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, March 4, at Indian Creek Cemetery with the Rev. H.B. Clark officiating.
“Sleep on in thy beauty. Thy sweet Angel Child.”
