Kate was born September 20, 1855, and is historically credited to be the first white female born in Comanche Coutny, Texas. Her parents were Charles Crawford Campbell (1827-1888) and Juliana S. Rubarth (1832-1897).
While Kate was still in the cradle, a group of indians came upon the homestead near Cora while the men were working in the fields. Kate’s mother gave the indians food after they indicated that they were hungry. These were not hostile indians and appeared to be Wacos. The indians took special interest in Kate as she lay on the hearth in the cradle. After the indians left, Kate’s mother went to get water and on returning to the house, discovered that the indians had left an indian baby and had taken Kate.
Kate’s mother sounded the alarm and the men took out after the indians. The men of the area soon tracked them to their encampment not far away and found them sitting around admiring the infant Kate. The babies were later exchanged with no harm to either.
